Common Percentage Mistakes to Avoid

  • Percentage vs. Percentage Points: If interest rates go from 2% to 3%, they increased by 1 percentage point but by 50% as a relative change. These are very different numbers that media and politicians frequently confuse (or exploit).
  • Sequential percentages don't add up: A 50% increase followed by a 50% decrease does NOT get you back to the starting point. 100 → 150 → 75. You end up 25% below where you started.
  • The base matters: A "40% discount" and then an additional "10% discount" is NOT a 50% discount — it's 46% (you pay 60% then 90% of that = 54% of original price).

Quick Mental Percentage Tricks

  • 10%: Move the decimal point one place left. 10% of $487 = $48.70
  • 5%: Half of 10%. 5% of $487 = $24.35
  • 1%: Move the decimal point two places left. 1% of $487 = $4.87
  • 25%: Divide by 4. 25% of $80 = $20
  • 33.3%: Divide by 3. 33% of $90 = $30
