The Critical Limitations of BMI

1. BMI Does Not Distinguish Fat from Muscle

BMI only measures weight relative to height. It cannot tell whether that weight is lean muscle mass or body fat. 3. BMI Differs by Ethnicity

Multiple large-scale studies have shown that people of Asian descent accumulate metabolically dangerous visceral fat at lower BMI levels than people of European descent. The WHO has published adjusted cut-off points for Asian populations: the "Overweight" threshold is often considered to begin at BMI 23 rather than 25 for East and South Asian individuals.

4. BMI and Sex Differences

Women naturally carry a higher percentage of body fat than men at the same BMI. A BMI of 24 in a woman reflects a different metabolic reality than BMI 24 in a man.

Better Alternatives to BMI Alone

Health professionals increasingly use BMI in combination with other measurements for a more complete picture:

  • Waist Circumference: A waist measurement above 35 inches (women) or 40 inches (men) indicates elevated abdominal fat risk regardless of BMI.
