The Complete Guide to UTM Parameters and Campaign Tracking

If you are running marketing campaigns, sending email newsletters, or posting links on social media without UTM parameters, you are flying blind. Without UTMs, Google Analytics groups massive amounts of traffic into useless buckets like "Direct" or "Referral." You'll know people visited your site, but you won't know if they clicked the link in your Facebook ad or your Tuesday newsletter. Our free UTM Builder instantly generates properly formatted, trackable URLs.

What are UTM Parameters?

UTM stands for "Urchin Tracking Module" (named after Urchin, the company Google acquired in 2005 to create Google Analytics). They are simply short text codes appended to the end of your URLs (after a ?). When a user clicks a link with UTM parameters, Google Analytics extracts that data and categorizes the traffic accordingly.

Example of a UTM-tagged URL:

https://example.com/shoes?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=spring_sale

The 5 Core UTM Parameters Explained

1. Campaign Source (utm_source) — Required

Identifies the specific platform, website, or publication sending the traffic.

Examples: google, facebook, newsletter, twitter, forbes.com

2. Campaign Medium (utm_medium) — Required

Identifies the marketing channel or type of link. Think of medium as the broader category that the source fits into.

Examples: cpc (cost-per-click/paid search), social (organic social media), email, affiliate, banner

3. Campaign Name (utm_campaign) — Required

Identifies the specific marketing effort, promotion, or product launch.

Examples: spring_sale_2024, welcome_email_sequence, retargeting_v2

4. Campaign Term (utm_term) — Optional

Used primarily for paid search to track the exact keyword you bid on.

Example: running+shoes, b2b+software

5. Campaign Content (utm_content) — Optional

Used to differentiate similar links pointing to the same URL, which is invaluable for A/B testing.

Examples: logolink vs. textlink, or blue_button vs. red_button

UTM Best Practices and Common Mistakes

1. Stick to Lowercase

UTM tags are case-sensitive. utm_source=Facebook and utm_source=facebook will show up as two entirely different traffic sources in Google Analytics. Always force lowercase (our tool does this automatically).

2. Use Underscores or Hyphens, Not Spaces

Spaces in URLs get encoded as ugly %20 characters. Instead of utm_campaign=spring sale, use spring_sale or spring-sale. Establish a convention and stick to it.

3. Never Use UTMs on Internal Links

Crucial rule: Never put UTM parameters on links within your own website (e.g., your homepage banner linking to a product page). If a user clicks an internal UTM link, Google Analytics will end their current session and start a brand new one, destroying your tracking of their original acquisition source.

4. Hide Long URLs with a Shortener

UTM-tagged URLs are long and ugly. If you are pasting them where users can see them (like a Twitter post or an SMS text message), run the final UTM URL through a link shortener like Bitly first. The tracking will survive the redirect.

How to View UTM Data in Google Analytics 4 (GA4)

To see your campaign results in GA4:

  1. Go to Reports > Acquisition > Traffic acquisition.
  2. Scroll down to the table.
  3. Change the primary dimension dropdown (default is usually "Session default channel group") to "Session source/medium" or "Session campaign".
  4. You will see exactly how many sessions, conversions, and revenue each specific UTM tag drove.

Foire Aux Questions

What are UTM parameters?

UTM parameters are short text codes added to URLs that help you track the performance of campaigns and content in Google Analytics.

Why should I use UTM tags?

Without UTM tags, all traffic from an email or social media post might just show up as "direct" or generic referral traffic. UTMs let you see exactly which post, email, or ad drove the visit.

Which parameters are required?

Technically only the Website URL is required by this tool, but for Google Analytics to properly track campaigns, you should always provide at least utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign.
