The Complete Guide to HTML Meta Tags: SEO, Open Graph, and Twitter Cards

Meta tags are the silent communicators of the web — invisible to users but critical for search engines and social platforms. Getting them right means better search rankings, higher click-through rates, and compelling social media previews. Our free Meta Tag Generator creates all the essential tags instantly with a form-based interface.

Essential Meta Tags for Every Page

  • <title> — The page title shown in browser tabs and search results. The single most important on-page SEO element. Keep it under 60 characters.
  • meta name="description" — A 140–155 character summary that appears under the title in search results. Does not directly affect ranking but strongly influences click-through rate.
  • meta name="robots" — Controls crawler behaviour. index, follow is the default; use noindex to exclude pages from search results (e.g., admin pages, thank-you pages).
  • link rel="canonical" — Tells search engines the authoritative URL for this page, preventing duplicate content issues from URL parameters, trailing slashes, or HTTPS/HTTP variants.
  • meta name="viewport" — Required for mobile responsiveness. Always use width=device-width, initial-scale=1.

Open Graph Tags for Social Sharing

Open Graph controls the preview card when a URL is shared on Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, and Slack:

  • og:title — Can differ from the HTML title. Often more compelling, less keyword-stuffed.
  • og:description — The social preview description. Can differ from the meta description.
  • og:image — The preview image. Use 1200×630px for best results across all platforms.
  • og:url — The canonical URL of the page.
  • og:type — Usually "website" for standard pages; "article" for blog posts.

Twitter Card Tags

Twitter/X uses its own card system. twitter:card has four values: summary (small thumbnail), summary_large_image (large image card), app, and player. For content sites, always use summary_large_image for maximum engagement.

After setting up your meta tags, validate them with Google's Rich Results Test. Also generate a URL-friendly slug or use our Character Counter to check description length.
